By choosing Uniswap’s API, Ledger enables native support for swaps while maintaining its core principles of user control and security.

# The challenge
Ledger Wallet is trusted by millions, and works seamlessly with Ledger signer devices to provide full control and secure self-custody of digital assets.

As swapping activity grew among its users, [Ledger](https://www.ledger.com/) looked for a way to offer trusted, decentralized swap functionality natively inside the wallet. This would allow users to stay in the secure environment of their Ledger device without being redirected elsewhere.

Meeting this demand required Ledger to integrate a solution with access to deep liquidity, fully permissionless access and fast, consistent execution. 

# The solution
After evaluating options, Ledger chose the Uniswap Trading API. It provided a trusted, production-ready way to add decentralized swaps without having to deal with the complexity of gas estimates or building their own routing.

Ledger Unlocks Secure, Onchain Swaps with the Uniswap Trading API

Making a crypto swap on a [decentralized exchange](https://blog.uniswap.org/what-is-a-decentralized-exchange) only takes a few clicks. The convenience and reliability of these onchain swaps is made possible, in part, by “liquidity providers” who supply tokens to liquidity pools, which are a cornerstone of [decentralized finance](https://blog.uniswap.org/what-is-defi). These pools enable trading, help balance prices, and can reward providers in return.

# What is liquidity provisioning?
Liquidity provisioning (or LPing) involves depositing a pair of tokens into a liquidity pool on a decentralized exchange like the Uniswap Protocol. These pools use smart contracts to enable permissionless, onchain trading.

By supplying liquidity, liquidity provisioners (or LPs) help ensure that traders can swap tokens efficiently, with minimal slippage when pool depth is high. In return, LPs earn a share of the trading fees — and in some cases, additional rewards.

Not all onchain activity involves LPs, but without them, the open markets that define DeFi wouldn’t exist.
# How do I become a liquidity provider on Uniswap?
Anyone can LP on Uniswap. There’s no minimum deposit required, and it’s easy to get started with just a pair of tokens. Some users add a little liquidity to learn, while others build more active strategies.

Becoming a liquidity provider starts with choosing a pool and depositing two tokens — like USDC and ETH. The amounts you deposit will be equal in market value. To LP on the Uniswap Protocol, this can be done directly through the [Uniswap Web App](https://app.uniswap.org/positions/?utm_medium=blog&utm_source=blog&utm_campaign=lp-blog&utm_content=uniswap-positions).

Once deposited, the tokens sit in a smart contract and provide liquidity for other users’ swaps. Every time someone trades against the pool, each LP that has contributed to the pool earns a portion of the trading fees, proportional to their share of the total liquidity.

LPs can add, remove, or adjust their position at any time — and they can collect their earned fees whenever they choose.

# Evaluating LP rewards and mitigating risks

Providing liquidity comes with tradeoffs, and understanding them can help you make smarter decisions if you choose to LP.

**1. Impermanent loss.** When the price of one token in your pair changes relative to the other, your position may be worth less than if you had simply held both tokens. Fees can help offset this, but not always. This loss, however, only becomes permanent if you withdraw your liquidity while prices are still out of balance.

**2. Market volatility.** Sharp price swings can increase the likelihood and impact of impermanent loss — which can be more common in volatile or uncorrelated pairs. 

**3. Fee variability.** LPs earn a portion of trading fees, but earnings depend on how much trading occurs — and whether your position is active within the pool’s price range.

**4. Price range exposure.** On Uniswap v3 and v4, you only earn LP rewards when the market price stays within your selected range. If the price moves out of range, your position may stop earning fees until you adjust it. In an earlier version of the Uniswap Protocol, v2, liquidity is always active across all price levels, and custom ranges are not available.
# More considerations for participation in onchain markets

With the right approach, LPing becomes a strategic way to participate in onchain markets. A few more considerations:

- **Choose token pairs you understand.** Get familiar with each token’s market dynamics — like what drives its price, how volatile it tends to be, and how it's used onchain.
- **Look for pools with steady trading and tokens that tend to move together in price.** These pairs — for example, many stable-stable pairs — often earn more consistent fees and are less likely to experience large impermanent losses.
- **Use platforms that offer control, transparency, and secure pools.** The [Uniswap Web App](https://app.uniswap.org/positions/?utm_medium=blog&utm_source=blog&utm_campaign=lp-blog&utm_content=uniswap-positions) lets you track performance, adjust your range, collect fees, and exit your position at any time.
- **Adjust your position based on how you think the market will move.** Tighter ranges concentrate your capital and can earn more fees — but they stop earning if the price moves out of range. Liquidity pools are the backbone of DeFi. Here’s what to know before you provide liquidity (LP) onchain.

Understanding Liquidity Provision in DeFi

Today we’re excited to announce Continuous Clearing Auctions (CCA), a permissionless protocol that helps teams bootstrap liquidity on Uniswap v4 and find the market price for new and low-liquidity tokens.

This is the first of several tools we’re building to help projects launch and deepen liquidity on the Uniswap protocol.

Built in collaboration with Aztec, the first project to launch with CCA, the protocol also includes an optional ZK Passport module that enables private, verifiable participation.

## What CCA solves

Liquidity formation often happens behind closed doors. That creates information gaps, privileges a few players, and can leave markets thin and unstable. We think there is a better way. CCA was designed around three core principles:

* **Onchain-native market creation.** The entire auction runs onchain, with pricing, bidding, and settlement happening transparently. No gatekeepers or offchain deals. 
* **Fair, gradual price discovery.** Supply is distributed over time through a continuous clearing process. This incentivizes bidding early, reduces sniping, limits volatility, and helps the market converge toward a fair value. 
* **Automatic liquidity seeding on Uniswap v4.** When the auction ends, proceeds automatically create a Uniswap v4 pool at the discovered price, deepening liquidity.

## How it works

**Setting up the auction**

Projects start off by defining how many tokens to sell, a starting price, and how long the auction will run. They can also customize with options like running in tranches, adding verification tools such as ZK Passport, or building entirely new modules on top of the platform.

**Placing bids**

Users then submit bids, specifying a maximum price and a total spend. Bids are non-withdrawable while in range (can be withdrawn if they’re out of range) but users can place as many as they like while the auction is live. Each bid is automatically spread across the remaining blocks of the auction, using the same max price for every split. A bid only fills if the block’s clearing price is at or below the bidder’s limit.

**Finding a price**

At the end of each block, the protocol sets a single market-clearing price – the highest price where all tokens for that block can be sold. Higher bids fill first, then bids at the clearing price, pro rata if needed. Everyone who fills in that block pays the same price.

As more bids come in and supply per block stays pre-set, clearing prices stay the same or trend upward. Early bidders tend to get a better average price since a larger portion of their bid can fill in earlier, cheaper blocks.

## What’s next

The Continuous Clearing Auction contract is live, and available for anyone who wants to use it. In the coming months, we’ll release additional modules to improve the experience for projects and communities launching with CCA.
